Bringing the power back to the people -the power to save!

The dreaded quarterly electricity and gas bill is an unwelcome surprise- and always poses the question – how on earth was THAT much power used?

We tick off what we are doing and using in the home and make changes, hanging the washing on the line, turning off the lights, switching off the air con, little actions that we all hope will make a difference by the time the next bill arrives.

But they don’t. Nothing changes; in fact, it’s quite likely your bill will have increased once again.

There is a lot of talk about power prices in Australia: how the electricity market is “broken” and needs a laser like focus to fix it.

Since the 1980s through most of the 2000s, electricity prices have tracked fairly closely to general consumer price trends.

In the past decade however, electricity has shot off the charts. Since 2008 power prices have risen 117 per cent, more than four times the average price increase across sectors.

How can that be?

As in any business, there are many costs included in your bill, which is more than just the power you actually consume.

  • There is the cost of transporting the electricity- Australia is a big country so one of the major components of your bill relates to the network component — the cost of transporting the electricity.
  • The retail component — the cost of billing and servicing you, the customer.
  • Then there is the wholesale component — the cost of generating the electricity.
  • And finally, the government policy component — the cost of environmental schemes that we pay for through our electricity bills.

For the forseeable future our electricity bill will continue to leave us, let’s say, a little hot under the collar.

Chances are, you don’t have the time to look into all the different suppliers and see if there is a better deal for your power supply out there. It’s a little bit like our medical insurance. We think it will be just too time consuming to bother to go to all that trouble of calling around to possibly find a cheaper rate.

And where you would even start? How many power suppliers are actually out there?
