When the ghouls come out to play…

There is definitely a division between the lovers and haters of Halloween. In fact, it would probably be true to say that even the lovers of it, hate the effect of all that sugar consumed by their little angels!

Whether you are for or against, this yearly ritual is becoming increasingly popular in Australia. And yes, it is easy to roll our eyes and say we are becoming “americanised”, BUT, as a multicultural society we have embraced many yearly events and customs from other countries, St Patricks Day and Valentines Day are two of the most prominent.

Halloween actually originated as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. People would dress up for the occasion to ward off ghosts before All Saints Day on 1 November. Followers of the Celtic religion believed that the barrier between our world and the world of ghosts, ghouls and spirits became thin at the end of summer and ‘All Hallow’s Eve’ would banish the evil spirits.

Although Halloween as it’s now celebrated, barely references its early traditions, there are many positive aspects of Halloween that can’t be dismissed.

So here  it is: the plus side to trick or treating:

1.

Exploring your neighbourhood-

What better way to see more streets and more of the area in which you live than by walking around?

Added bonus – the more you walk, the less those candy calories will have an impact!

2.

Meet people and neighbours–

As you walk around the streets keeping an eye on your little ghouls, princesses and vampires, you will notice how relaxed and chatty other people are. Halloween is a great way to catch up with old friends and even make some new ones.

3.

Get those creative juices flowing-

What a great change from homework or sitting on electronic devices. Children love having the chance to be creative, love Halloween and LOVE spending time decorating their house, planning and creating the costumes for their character for the big night.

It’s a really wonderful opportunity to be creative, and have fun spending time together as a family.

4.

It’s actually fun-

You’re never too old to let loose and join in. It’s really quite bit of fun to become a part of it – whether you are in character in your home waiting for trick or treaters, or out on the street with your little ones.

This one is next level – hope they’re not planning on selling the house anytime soon…

We can tend to get a little too serious and tied to routine at times, and this is a great excuse to get out of the house, have fun with your children, meet the neighbours, and explore your ‘hood.
